Know Your Rights

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a federal law that protects consumers. Here are some of your key rights when dealing with any debt collector.

Right to Validation

You may request written verification of the debt within 30 days of first contact. If you make your request in writing during that period, collection activity on the disputed debt must pause until verification is provided.

Right to Dispute

If you dispute the debt in writing within 30 days, we must verify it or cease collection. You may also dispute information you believe is inaccurate.

Right to Stop Contact

You may send a written request asking us to stop contacting you. We will confirm receipt and may only contact you to advise of specific actions.

Protection from Harassment

Collectors cannot use abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices. This includes threatening violence, using obscene language, or making false statements.

Contact Hour Restrictions

We may only contact you between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. your local time, and cannot contact you at your place of work if you tell us this is not permitted.

Right to Legal Representation

If you are represented by an attorney regarding the debt, we must communicate with your attorney rather than contacting you directly.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I being contacted by Collection Bureau Associates?

CBA collects past-due accounts on behalf of businesses and organizations. If you've received a notice from us, it means a creditor has referred your account for collections. Your notice will include the name of the original creditor and the amount owed.

Can I set up a payment arrangement?

Yes. We understand that financial circumstances vary. Please contact our office to discuss your situation and we will do our best to work with you on a resolution that fits your ability to pay.

Will this account affect my credit?

Collection Bureau Associates does not report accounts to the credit bureaus. We do not furnish information to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, and resolving an account with us does not change your credit report. If you have a question about something appearing on your credit report, contact the bureaus or the original creditor directly.

What if I already paid this bill?

If you believe this account has already been paid, please contact us with documentation (such as a payment receipt or bank statement). We will investigate and resolve the matter promptly.

How do I reach someone at CBA?
